The Academia Interamericana de Panama is a small, Catholic, co-ed, bilingual school that seeks to prepare its graduates, and undergraduates, to continue their education in Panama or abroad. The Academia Interamericana has a fixed curriculum, as prescribed by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Panama, and is fully accredited by the Ministry of Education. We endeavor to meet the educational requirements of Panama, as well as those of stateside schools.
Beginning in Preschool, both English and Spanish are taught as first languages. We stress the importance of being able to communicate well in both languages. In elementary school, as well as in middle school, Science and two periods of Language Arts are taught daily in English. Spanish, Mathematics, and Social Studies are taught in Spanish. Students are also required to participate in classes of Art, Music, and Physical Education. Students begin studying Computer Science in Pre School.
In Senior High School, Biology, Anthropology, Sociology, and Psychology, as well as U.S. Literature, World Literature, and English Literature, are taught in English. The U.S. Literature, World Literature, and English Literature courses are honors level courses. Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, History, Philosophy, Latin American Literature, Spanish Literature, and a second course in World Literature are taught in Spanish. Calculus and Chemistry are also offered at an honors level. French is a required subject in Senior High School.
The Academia works on a semester basis. 60% is the minimum passing grade. We grade on a percentage basis. If you wish to use the letter system: 100-91=A, 90-81=B, 80-71=C, 70-60=D. Competition is encouraged in academics as well as in sports. Our classes have a maximum of twenty-eight students. Our school year runs from early March through mid-December. Most of our English teachers are graduates of U.S. colleges and universities.
Our curriculum is extremely demanding. Students are encouraged to participate in community activities that are organized and sponsored by the school or the Parent-Teacher Association. After having completed 10th grade, students are required to participate in a social service program that takes them to extremely poor rural communities where they live and work with community members for a three week period. Also each year the school sends a delegation to participate in Hacia Democracy. This is a Harvard University sponsored debate regarding social problems. The leading bilingual high schools in Central America participate.
Our graduates have been accepted in prestigious Universities in the U.S. such as: Brown, Barnard, Carnegie Mellon, Columbia, Duke, Emory, Georgetown, Georgia Tech, Gettysburg, Harvard, Holy Cross, Johns Hopkins, M.I.T., Princeton U., University of Illinois, University of Notre Dame, U.Va, Smith, Stanford, Tulane, Tufts, University of Pennsylvania, U.S.C., Villanova, Washington University, Wellesley, West Point, Williams, William & Mary and Yale, among others.
